This list contains some of the better parsers for RSS and Atom feeds. I’ll try to keep it up-to-date.

RSS/Atom Parser for Java:

ROME

ROME is an set of open source Java tools for parsing, generating and publishing RSS and Atom feeds. The core ROME library depends only on the JDOM XML parser and supports parsing, generating and converting all of the popular RSS and Atom formats including RSS 0.90, RSS 0.91 Netscape, RSS 0.91 Userland, RSS 0.92, RSS 0.93, RSS 0.94, RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0, Atom 0.3, and Atom 1.0. You can parse to an RSS object model, an Atom object model or an abstract SyndFeed model that can model either family of formats.

Jakarta FeedParser

Jakarta FeedParser is a Java RSS/Atom parser designed to elegantly support all versions of RSS (0.9, 0.91, 0.92, 1.0, and 2.0), Atom 0.5 (and future versions) as well as easy ad hoc extension and RSS 1.0 modules capability.

Eddie

Eddie is a liberal RSS and Atom feed parsing library for Java. It is a SAX based parser and as a result is capable of parsing a significant number of broken feeds.

Informa

With Informa we enable you with a harmonised view on a news channel object model. Both channels and news items do have metadata assigned, it does not make any difference from which channel format they were originally retrieved (RSS 0.9x, RSS 1.0 / RDF, RSS 2.0, Atom 0.3 and Atom 1.0).

I have tested Grooker — a really nice looking search-engine — some years ago, when it was a desktop-application. Seems that it has become a web-application since then. Its still nice looking and returns good results.

SemSol is a forthcoming Web development framework that uses Semantic Web technology to significantly increase productivity and flexibility for everyday Web programming.

Hmm, the description on the page sounds really promising. It uses hot things like SPARQL, RDF, microformats and so on.
Hope there will soon be some more information.

On my daily ramble through the web i found the nice Firefox extension “Tails Firefox Extension 0.3” which displays you all the well-known microformats which are placed in the current website. Supported formats are

• hCard
• hCalendar
• hReviews
• xFolk
• hAtom
• hResume
• geo

And it’s integrated really smoothly into Firefox’s status-bar using this little icon

You click and see all the fine microformat-data clearly arranged in a window.

• Graphviz is an open source graph visualization software.
• The Macintosh port of the automated graph layout software, featuring a new document-based GUI, export to PDF and many more bitmap formats, full alpha transparency, native font and shapefile support and anti-aliasing.

Whobar is a tool that allows users to login to a website using InfoCard, OpenID or i-names and makes it all transparent to the web application. Whobar is written in PHP, but works like a proxy, so the web application can be in any language.

A not really active project i think, but maybe worth a look.

After three years i’ll give Tinderbox another try and will play the next time a little bit with the 3.6.2 demo-version. My first impressions after this long period of time are ….. wait…. i will show it in a Tinderbox-Map to you ;)

Especially the “Geek charm” is a big pro. :)

Just saw that ArgoUML offers a Java Web Start file for the latest stable version. Very usefull if you are en-route and want to create UML diagrams.

Ich hatte ja letztens schon geschrieben, dass ich nun dem Google Reader meine Feeds anvertraue. Und damals mit meinem Halbwissen war ich ja schon begeistert. Aber nun habe ich vorhin diesen Artikel bei lifehacker gelesen und bin hin und weg. Der Google Reader kann nämlich eine Menge Shortcuts verarbeiten und das richtig cool. Zum Beispiel mit der Tastenkombination “g”+”u” kommt ein schickes Fenster in dem man einen Titel eingeben kann und er dann automatisch den Feed sucht:

Mit “g”+”t” kann man nach seinen Tags suchen, ebenfalls mit so einem netten Fenster.
Und dann kommen noch zahlreise andere Shortcuts, aber die beschreibe ich jetzt nicht, da der “lifehacker” hier schon eine tolle Arbeit geleistet hat — sogar mit einem Video dabei. ;)

Hab gerade eben aufgrund eines Artikels die Software “Think” für den Mac entdeckt und ein wenig getestet. Die einzige Aufgabe von Think ist es, eine gerade laufende Applikation in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen und alle anderen Programme mit einer Farbe zu überdecken. Dadurch soll man nicht unnötig abgelenkt werden und sich auf nur eine Applikation konzentrieren. Die fokussierte Applikation erscheint dabei im Think-Icon.

Eigentlich finde ich die Idee recht gut, weil man ja doch immer 5-10 Programme geöffnet hat und dann schon schnell mal mit den Augen hin- und herwandert.
Ein Problem bei Think ist meiner Meinung aber, dass ein Programmwechsel immer über das sogenannte “Illumination Panel” erfolgen muss. Das Panel ist so eine Liste mit den zur Zeit aktiven Programmen ähnlich der Liste die erscheint wenn man “APFEL-TAB” drückt. Nun erscheint dieses Panel aber leider nur, wenn man das aktive Programm schließt bzw. explizit auf so ein kleines Think-”Control Panel” klickt.

Zudem wird auch der Desktop mit der Farbe überdeckt und man kann nicht mal mehr dort Dateien reinziehen bzw. aufrufen.

Das praktische an diesem Online-News-Reader ist, dass er sich alle Nachrichten aus dem Feed merkt seit dieser das erste Mal von einem Benutzer in den Google Reader geladen wurde.

Datenschutzhinweis: Wie bei allen Google-Produkten sollte man aber darauf achten, dass man nicht zu viel Daten von sich preisgibt. ;)
